My very very late entry to :iconhisanakuchiki:'s contest Animal's Folklore Contest~Katana of Gion

The theme of the contest was to draw one of :iconhisanakuchiki:'s characters with an animal of the Japanese folklore. I think I chose Henmi Kaori right away, since drawing blondes with copics is a challenge, but also because this beauty needs more love!! O(≧∇≦)O A little background story:
"Kaori is an 18-year-old former geisha. She fled from her life as an artisan after she witnessed the murder of her master, Wakabe Ayano, at the hands of a nobleman. The nobleman (who feared that she would expose the murder) hunted her, driving Kaori to seek refuge at the house of Akirako. (...) She still suffers nightmares from the killing she witnessed, but she hides them behind a constant smile."
As for the animal I chose Komainu. The Komainu folklore were brought to Japan via Korea, which in turn received them from China, which in turn received them from India. They are often seen outside temples as a pair of Lion-dog statues, representing the “beginning and end” of everything, yin and yang, or death and life. An open-mouthed komainu represents “a,” first letter in Japanese alphabet, while the closed-mouthed komainu represents “un”, the last letter, similar to the western alpha and omega. The name 'komainu' comes from a guardian one-horned dog at the entrance of the underworld and some Japanese statues still depicted the closed mouthed Komainu with a horn, and resting one of their paws on a ball.
I've found the dual meaning of the Komainu to be extremelly linked to Kaori's life and immediately reminded me of the card Strengt from Ukiyo-e tarot, which is one of Kaori's characteristics. But unlike the card, Kaori is not opening the Komainu's mouth. She's slowlly closing it, turning "beginning" Komainu into an "end" Komainu, hoping to bring some closure to her former life and some peace to her sadness about her Master's death. Ayano's flower ornament is on her right hand, a symbol that justice needs to be done, and the wicked to be punished by the Komainu.

Ma trés trés tardie participation à :iconhisanakuchiki:'s concours Animal's Folklore Contest~Katana of Gion

Hi, I arrived here through :iconprojectcomment:.
Hmm, those folds on the lady's robe sure do give texture and a three dimensional look to that robe she's wearing . It almost looks like you could touch it and it would feel very soft. To accomplish that realistic look on the robe, the top can have the nuanced shading that the bottom has. So basically, just add some more blending to the shadows.
Your characters appear as if they're floating. I'd add lines for the floor, maybe a one point perspective would be nice, but there are some other perspectives that might be suitable for your drawing. Here's how a one point perspective drawing looks like: s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/o….
Don't worry there are several tutorials out there and it's not too big of a challenge.
I'm assuming they're inside of a building. Seeing as there is a light source on the window, the positions for the shadows wouldn't be hard to find and place.
The flowers the lady is holding are pretty , and can look prettier with bigger pedals that have nuanced shading like the flowers on her head. :)
On the positive side, I adore the way you draw hair. It bunches up in real life and in here too. The curly hair is outstanding. The first thing that my eyes go to is to the lion, because it's that good with the skilled shading going with the hair.
Symbolism makes this piece interesting, which is great when accomplished without words. I must say, good job on that.
The window's glow looks impressive for something done on marker, I mean that golden glow is spot on. Not only that , but your character's robe pattern is beautiful.
